Remembrance Weekend

12/13 November 2005

A committee meeting was held at 1100 hours on Saturday, 12 November with 12 out of the 13 members present.  A long agenda was reasonably swiftly dispatched with one major item.  Our Branch President, Colonel Mike Hill, has unfortunately resigned due to his retirement from the Services.  Mike and his wife, Theresa, have now settled down to a new life in Canada.  We wish them both well.  It was decided to appoint Lt. Col David Whimpenny as the new President and he later agreed to this appointment, stating that he would be proud to accept this honour.
The Annual General Meeting followed at 1400 hours with 27 members present.  Apologies were given for 25 others.   The new President was presented with his jewel of office.  It was decided that, in order to keep up with current times, and to reflect current thinking, to change the name of the Branch to the Y Services (Garats HaY) Branch.  The necessary steps have been put in hand to carry out this change .
The annual dinner was again held in the Ramada Hotel with over 40 members and their partners present.  A total of £336 was raised to sponsor one of our members, Nicky Beresford, to run in next year's London marathon. (See What's New?).

A service was held on Sunday 13 November in St Marys in the Elms church at Woodhouse, conducted by Canon Derek Buxton, and attended by many old faces, and with a dash of colour from seven uniformed men and women from all three Services at Chicksands. The grand total of £300 was collected in aid of the Poppy Appeal.

Following the service, an Act of Remembrance was held at the War Memorial where a wreath was laid on behalf of the Branch by our Chairman .  Accompanying him were Lady Martin who laid a wreath on behalf of the Parish, and a Sergeant who laid one on behalf of the personnel at Chicksands.

Again a lunch was held at the Quality hotel in Loughborough, albeit with a smaller contingent than last year.

A long, full but satisfying weekend.
